A series of five five-second flashes appeared sporadically through the April 29, 2009 airing of "The Variable," the fourteenth episode of the fifth season of Lost. A clip was shown during each commercial break during the episode, and was followed by the phrase "What did you see?." A week later, during the airing of the Lost episode "Follow the Leader," an expanded promo was shown, with more clips added, with a voice-over stating that "Just because we saw these things doesn't mean they're going to happen." These clips are a hidden promotion for the Mosaic Collective website, where viewers were encouraged to submit descriptions of the flashes they saw. These first five flashes were of a funeral, schoolchildren, a wedding, an untrasound of an unborn fetus, and a surfer.
A week later, in the May 6 episode of Lost, four new flashes (in addition to the previously seen flashes of the funeral and the schoolchildren) were shown in a new TV spot. These new flashes included a kangaroo, a tornado, a graduation, and a card with the word "mosaic" typed on it.
